URBACT

Practical Information

Welcome to Montpellier

A European conurbation close to the shores of the Mediterranean, Montpellier is the capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon region and the administrative capital of the Hérault department. Easily accessible by road (A9), by train (TGV high speed train, 3h15 from Paris) or by plane (Montpellier Méditerranée International Airport), Montpellier is centrally positioned at the heart a number of major cities across the South of Europe.

Montpellier's climate is typically Mediterranean, with 300 days of sunshine a year.

Central Montpellier is 8th ranked in France by the size of its population of 250 000, excluding the suburbs. Montpellier is one of the few cities in France to have seen its population increase in the last 50 years. As the 7th largest centre of Higher Education in France, Montpellier is home to 60,000 students working in three Universities and a number of undergraduate and postgraduate schools.

Montpellier's cultural attractiveness is strong and internationally recognized. It hosts major festivals of dance and music and a number of museums (including the Fabre Museum, housing one of France's greatest collections). It boasts sites listed in the UNESCO World Heritage, which are located some kilometres away (the Citadel of Carcassonne, the Roman bridge at Pont du Gard, the Canal du Midi and its locks...). The Montpellier region also produces fine wines (Appellation Contrôlée Côteaux du Languedoc).

Last but not least, Monpellier has one of the largest pedestrian precincts in Europe. Virtually all the city centre is closed to private vehicle traffic. Travel is by tram (2 lines) or by bicycle (1,000 bikes being available throughout the inner citer and in the suburbs).
